Computer Maintenance
A computer that gets a little attention every couple of years does not develop the same problems as one that gets none. Clean out the dust, update what is out of date, check the disk is healthy, and make sure the backup actually works.
That is what this is, and it is the cheapest thing you can do to avoid a big repair later.

What a service includes
- Dust out - the single most effective thing and the one everyone skips
- Thermal check, and fan and heat-sink clean
- All software and Windows updates applied properly
- Startup and services reviewed
- Disk health checked, with an honest read on how long it will last
- Backups set up, and a restore actually tested
- Memory and memory leak check
- A written summary of anything worth watching
How often
Every two to three years for a desktop on a desk, more often if it is in a warm space or runs hot. Laptops need it less often for dust but benefit from the same service.
This is what stops the "it just stopped working" call, which is always more expensive than the maintenance would have been.
How a visit works
- 1
You call and describe it
No booking form and no call centre. I will tell you honestly whether it sounds like something I can fix, and roughly what it will cost.
- 2
I come to you
Early morning, evening, weekend or public holiday - all normal, none surcharged. Home or office. You can watch the work.
- 3
You are told before anything happens
The price is agreed before the job starts, and if a part is needed you get the cost price rather than a mark-up.
- 4
It works, or you do not pay
If I cannot fix it, there is no charge. If something I did stops working, I come back and look at it.
Maintenance - common questions
Why does my computer get so hot?
Dust in the heat sinks and fans, which most people never clean and which every machine accumulates. It causes the noise, the shutdowns under load, and a good share of the sudden failures.
Do I really need a backup?
You need one. A drive that has worked for five years is not a drive that will work for six. I set it up and test a restore, because a backup you have never restored from is a hope, not a backup.
Can I do some of this myself?
The software half, some of it. The physical half - dust, thermal paste, fan health - needs the machine open, and doing it wrong can cost more than the service.
You might also need
Most jobs are a combination of these. If you are not sure which one you need, describe the problem on the phone and I will tell you.
