What jobs usually cost
These are what a straightforward job comes to at the flat rate. They are not a separate price list - there is no separate price list. Anything unusual gets quoted before I start.
| Job | Time on site | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| A quick fix - a frozen app, a bad setting, a stuck update | 15–30 min | $150 |
| Virus, malware or spyware removal | 45–90 min | $150 |
| Speed up a slow computer | 1–2 hrs | $150–$300 |
| Data recovery from a failed drive | Depends | Quoted first |
| Install a new SSD and transfer everything | 1–2 hrs | $150–$300 + part |
| Set up a new computer from the box | 2–3 hrs | $300–$450 |
| Full network and Wi-Fi setup | 1–2 hrs | $150–$300 |
| Screen or battery replacement | Same-day | $150 + part |
Figures are indicative for a typical job at the flat rate and exclude parts. A job that turns out to be more involved is discussed before the extra time is spent, not after.
Parts are at cost
If a job needs a part, you are told which part, what it costs, and what happens next before anything is ordered. Parts are charged at what I pay, with no mark-up and no "handling fee".
There is a limit to how much sense it makes to spend on an old machine. On a ten-year-old desktop, a $90 SSD is usually a good call because it is the single biggest improvement available. A $300 motherboard is usually not. You will get an honest answer either way, including when the answer is that you should not spend the money.
How this compares
The competitors publish their rates, so here they are next to ours. The difference is not the quality of the work - it is that a franchise rate has to cover an office, insurance, dispatch and a technician learning your machine, and all of that lands in the number you are quoted.
| Service | Here | Geek Squad | Gizmo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic computer training | $150 | $160 | $160 |
| Data migration / backup | $150 | $229 | $229 |
| Virus & spyware removal | $150 | $149 | $149 |
| Software installation | $150 | $129 | $129 |
| Add computer to network | $150 | $89 | $89 |
| Wireless network + router setup | $150 | $149 | $149 |
| Complete system clean | $150 | $129 | $129 |
| Hard drive replacement | $150 | $189 | $189 |
Competitor rates as published at the time of writing and may since have changed. The point is the call-out and the rate, not the individual line items.
Pricing questions
Why is there one price when other companies have a list?
Because a list rewards the technician for the machine, not for the customer. A flat $150 means I have no reason to rush the diagnosis, no reason to talk you into the more expensive option, and no reason to bill you for the time it takes me to learn your particular setup.
What does the $150 actually cover?
The first hour of labour, including diagnosis, travel to your address in the Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich areas, and the time to explain what was wrong and what I did about it. Parts are separate and charged at cost.
How do you charge for time over an hour?
In 15-minute blocks at the same hourly rate. If I have been working on your machine for an hour and ten minutes, that is one hour and fifteen minutes. You get told when you are approaching the end of the hour.
Is there a call-out fee?
No. Travel within the service area is included in the rate, so the cost of getting to you is not a separate line item. That is also why a job two suburbs over costs exactly the same as one next door.
Do you charge more at weekends or on public holidays?
No. The rate is the rate at 8am on a Tuesday and at 8pm on a public holiday.
What if a part is needed - how much is that?
Parts are at cost, and you are told the part and the price before anything is ordered. Typical examples: a 500GB SSD is roughly $70–$95, a laptop screen for common models $180–$350. If a part is not worth it on a machine of that age, I will say so rather than fit it.
What if my computer cannot be fixed?
You do not pay. If it is beyond repair or beyond what is economically sensible, I will tell you and there is no charge for the diagnosis.
Do you offer discounts for regular or business work?
For ongoing work in a home office or small business, the rate is still $150 - the discount is that I already know your setup, so the job takes less time. Call and mention it.
Still not sure what yours will cost?
Describe the problem on the phone and you will get a straight answer before anyone books anything. If it is not a job I take, I will tell you that too.
