Browser Redirect Removal

You click a link or type a search and end up on a site you did not ask for. Sometimes it is a genuine site that is simply squatting on your search results. Sometimes it is malware, and the redirect is the payload.

Either way it gets removed properly rather than worked around.

The different kinds

These need different fixes, and it is worth knowing which you have:

  • Search redirect - your searches are rerouted to another engine you did not choose
  • Link redirect - a link goes somewhere other than where it says it goes
  • Homepage hijack - the homepage is locked to a site you did not set
  • New-tab redirect - a new tab opens something other than a page
  • DNS hijack - the browser is fine but the machine resolves addresses wrongly
  • Router-level hijack - every device on the network is affected, not just one computer

Checking the rest of the network

If the same redirects appear on your phone and tablet, it is not the computer. I check the router and the devices, because fixing one machine and leaving the rest compromised means it comes straight back.

How a visit works

  1. 1

    You call and describe it

No booking form and no call centre. I will tell you honestly whether it sounds like something I can fix, and roughly what it will cost.

  2. 2

    I come to you

Early morning, evening, weekend or public holiday - all normal, none surcharged. Home or office. You can watch the work.

  3. 3

You are told before anything happens

The price is agreed before the job starts, and if a part is needed you get the cost price rather than a mark-up.

  4. 4

It works, or you do not pay

If I cannot fix it, there is no charge. If something I did stops working, I come back and look at it.

Redirects - common questions

Is website redirection a virus?

Sometimes. A hijack installed by malware is a virus problem; a redirect baked into a search engine you chose is a configuration problem. I work out which before starting.

My phone is redirected too. Can you fix that?

I can check the router and the network settings, which is usually where that comes from. I cannot repair a phone, but I can tell you exactly what to change on it.

Most jobs are a combination of these. If you are not sure which one you need, describe the problem on the phone and I will tell you.
